There are a number of people who want to become a nursing assistant. The increase of the elderly population has created a larger demand for healthcare providers. Becoming a nursing assistant is one of the best ways to enter the medical field.

The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to enroll in a state-approved CNA training program. Enrolling in a state-approved program will ensure that you will receive the proper education and training to be a competent nursing assistant.

CNA training in California involves at least 150 hours of both theoretical lessons and practical skills training. Students will experience what it is like to work in an actual clinical set up, while under the supervision of a qualified clinical instructor. Students are not allowed to perform any procedure that has not yet been taken up in class.

Clinical instructors are registered nurses with at least 2 years of nursing experience. One of those years was spent working in a long-term care facility. 6 months prior to starting work as an instructor, these nurses completed 24 hours of continuing education about planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing education programs.

Most training programs in California can be completed within 2 to 6 months of continuous training. Once you complete your training you can then submit the CNA Initial Application Form to the CDPH. If the CDPH is satisfied with your application, they will deem you eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. You can apply for the exams anytime within 2 years from the completion of your training. Every applicant will also be given three tries to pass the test. If they failed for the third time, they must enroll again and retrain in order to be allowed to take the exams.

The NNAAP exam was developed to test the competency of each aspiring nursing assistant candidate. It consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. If you are able to pass all the tests, your name will be added to the Nurse Aide Registry. The NAR is a complete list of all the individuals who have met the federal and state’s training and testing requirements. Only those who are on the NAR may work in a certified nursing facility.

Once your name is on the NAR, the Aide and Technician Certification Section will send you your CNA certificate. You can use the certificate and show it to your potential employers when you apply for work. The certificate will prove that you are a competent nursing assistant. However, even with a nurse aide certificate, employers will still verify your certification before hiring you. If you are already a nursing assistant from a different state, they you are welcome to work in the state. All you have to do to work is to apply for reciprocity. When you apply, your license should still have an active status in Nurse Aide Registry of the state you came from.
