The main goal in becoming a nursing assistant in California is to get certified by the Aide and Technician Certification Section of the L&C Program. If you have no previous background as a nursing assistant, then the only way for you to get certified is to challenge and pass the certification exam.
There are two parts of the certification exam. The first part is the written knowledge test. In this test, you will be given a total of 120 minutes to answer all 70 multiple-choice questions. Ten of those questions are pre-test items and will not be included in the total score. They were added there simply for statistical purposes.
The questions will be taken from a variety of concepts. These topics will include, but are not limited to, activities of daily living, basic nursing skills, restorative skills, psychosocial skills, roles and responsibilities, and client rights and independence.
If you have trouble with reading English, you can request to take the oral test in conjunction with the written test. You will be given the same amount of time and number of questions. The main difference is that the oral exam has a reading and comprehension test, which will test the candidate’s ability to comprehend the Basic English words that are used by nursing assistants. If you want to take an oral exam, you must make a request when you apply for the NNAAP examination.
The second part of the NNAAP exam is the skills evaluation. In this part, you will be asked to perform randomly selected nursing skills in a given scenario in front of an evaluator. You will only have 30 minutes to perform all the skills. The first skill will always be proper hand washing while the rest will be randomly selected from a given set of skills. In order to pass this test, you must perform all procedures with 80% competency.
You are required to pass both exams in order to get certified. If there are no technical problems, you can receive the results of your exam after 10 minutes. If you do pass, your name will be forwarded to the ATCS and you will receive your CNA certificate within 10 business days after you pass.
You must keep this certification active in order to maintain your eligibility to work as a nursing assistant. No CNA is allowed to work with an expired certification. If your certificate does expire, you can reactivate it by taking an evaluation exam. To check your status, you can go online to http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx or call (916) 327-2445 to speak to a CNA representative.
