To work as a nursing assistant in California, the CA Department of Public Health requires a nursing assistant candidate to complete an approved training course and pass the certification exam that is conducted by Pearson VUE.
The demand for certified nursing assistants in California is higher than the national average. A certified nursing assistant makes an average of $27,000 in a year, depending on where he or she works. With the number of people who want to become a CNA increasing, it is no wonder that you can now find approved programs being offered by nursing homes, hospitals, community colleges, assisted living centers, rehabilitation facilities, and private training institutions. There are also some websites that offer online training.
Approved programs take a minimum of 150 hours to complete. The entire program is divided into lectures and on-the-job training while under the supervision of a clinical instructor. Programs are also required to cover 16 different modules that will teach students about infection control, nutrition, safety and emergency procedures, communication and interpersonal skills, roles and responsibilities, vital signs, and many more.
Completing an approved program will make a candidate be able to apply for the certification exam. This exam is divided into a written/oral knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates are allowed to retake the exam up to two times if they should fail in at least one part. To know more about the exams, please go to www.pearsonvue.com and download a copy of the Candidate Handbook.
If you pass all the tests, your name will be forwarded by Pearson VUE to the Aide and Technician Certification Section of the Licensing and Certification Program. The ATCS will then send you your CNA certificate within a few days after you pass. You will use this certificate when you go applying for work.
Employers will only hire those who have been certified by the ATCS. Even with your certificate, they will still verify the certification of each candidate by going to http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx. You can also use this link if you want to check your own record. It is your responsibility to keep your record updated. Please inform the ATCS, within 60 days, if you changed your name or address by sending them a letter.
