As more and more individuals who are now trying to become nursing assistants, the federal and state governments need to ensure that new nursing assistants know how to properly take care of the patients. That is why all nursing assistant candidates are required to successfully complete a training course and get certified before working as a round-the-clock nursing assistant.
All training facilities that wish to offer CNA training need to be certified by the Department of Education before they can take any students. Their training curriculum must last at least 80 hours of instructions to get certified. Out of the total number of training hours, 37.5 hours must be allocated for supervised clinical practice. Both lectures and practical training must be done at the same time.
CNA training facilities have different requirements for admission. Overall, you must be at least 16 years old to apply with a high school diploma or a GED. You’ll also need to pass the criminal background checks. The state does not allow anybody to start training without passing the background checks. You’ll also need to undergo physical and medical exams to ensure that you are in top physical shape and do not have any communicable diseases.
The fees for nursing assistant training programs in Pennsylvania usually cost around $350 to $1000. The fees normally include costs of books, uniforms, and other essential materials. An applicant who is already employed by a certified nursing facility prior to enrolling in the program may not be charged for the training and testing fees. All costs will be paid by the employer.
During your instruction you will learn many of the fundamental nursing skills you will utilize on the job. Here’s a list of the primary health care related proficiencies you will learn: measuring and check vital signs, dressing residents, toileting, bathing procedures, assisting catheter input/output, nourishment & nutrition, assisting with patient transport, range of motion exercises, infection control, resident housekeeping, safety procedures, and medical terminology.
Once you complete your training you will be ready and able to take to the NNAAP exams. The NNAAP exam consists of a written test and a manual skills evaluation. you are given three chances to pass both parts. Those who are not able to do so must retake a training class. If you pass both parts within 24 months after completing your training, then your name will be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry and you will be given a certification. The registry will give you a Registry Card, which you can show to your employer. To find the closest testing location you should contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-795-2350.
Your Registry card, as well as your eligibility to work as a certified nursing assistant in Pennsylvania is only valid for 24 consecutive months. You’ll need to renew your certification before it expires. No employee is allowed to continue working with an expired Registry card. To renew your certification, just go and visit www.pulseportal.com. If you let your certification expire, you can renew it by retaking the NNAAP exams once again.
An NNAAP exam applicant with a lapsed CNA certification is given only one chance to pass. If the applicant fails, he must undergo retraining before he or she can retake the exam. An applicant who has undergone retraining must take both parts of the exams. For more information regarding the NAR, please call the DOH at (800) 852-0518.
