If you are looking for a ways to enter the medical field, then you should start considering on becoming a nurse aide. As a nurse aide, you will work under the supervision of the registered nurses and provide nursing and nursing related care to the patients. With the experiences you gain as a nursing aide, getting a CNA certification will open greater opportunities for you.
The first step in becoming a nursing aide is to attend a CNA training program. Before you enroll, please make sure that the program you enroll in is approved by the Tennessee Department of Health. These programs are required to offer 75 hours of training. The training curriculum is divided into lectures and practical training. You will find these programs offered in different training institutions. There are also online courses that you can take.
During the instruction you will learn all the skills required to become certified to work. These skills include communication skills, basic nursing skills, infection control, medical terminology, patient rights, CPR, Heimlich, safety procedures, and emergency preparedness. You can learn all of these things when you enroll in a CNA class. Completing a training program is also a requirement for you to be able to apply for the state license exams.
After you complete your training, the next step is to apply for the state competency exam. This exam consists of a knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation. It is currently conducted by D&S Diversified Technologies at approved testing sites. With the new system, the exam can now be taken online though several regional testing sites. You will take their knowledge test through the computer and in turn, the evaluators will also use a computer to score you in your skills exam. If there are no technical problems, the results for the WebETest are released the following day at 3:00 PM.
The competency exam will test you on five of the twenty-five skills you learned during your school training. There is also a written 75-item knowledge test. Those who pass the exam are placed on the nurse aide registry. Those listed on the registry are valid for 24 months. During that time you will need to work one eight hour shift as a nurse aide to remain listed in good standing.
If the candidate passes both tests, he will gain entry into the NAR. D&S DT will also send your CNA card within 4-6 weeks after passing the exams. Your name on the Registry will remain there for 24 months. To keep your name on the Registry and your eligibility to work as a nurse aide, you must for at least 8 hours as a paid nurse aide in a nursing facility that is certified by the Division of Health Care Facilities. Private work, sitting, working in a physician’s office, and companion services will not be considered as qualified work as you will not be allowed to renew.
