To become a nursing aide, your first step would be to enroll in a state-approved training program. By completing a state-approved program, you will become eligible to apply for the nurse aide license exams for this state. Currently CNA classes in Illinois are required to offer 40 hours of theoretical instruction and practical training experience in a health care environment that includes hands-on skills instruction in order to qualify.
Once you pass the license exams, your name will be entered in the state’s online registry for nurse aides. Keep in mind that the state of Illinois does not offer any certifications or licenses upon passing the license exams. Those who have taken nursing courses like nursing or LPN, may also apply for the exams provided that they have met the minimum required training hours. The license exams for this state are offered by different facilities and institutions. The exams are composed of two parts, a written exam and a skills evaluation. In order to pass the license exams, the applicant must be able to pass all the tests. Every applicant will be allowed to take the exams up to three times before they will be required to undergo retraining.
If you are a RN that is from Illinois, you may work as a nursing assistant immediately even if your name is not on the state’s registry for nursing aides. Nursing assistants from other states are also welcome to work here if they apply for reciprocity. For more information about the requirements for reciprocity, you can call this number (217) 785-5133.
