Similar to many other states, a CNA certification is a requirement to work as a nurse aide in a state-approved nursing facility. One must meet several requirements in order to qualify to receive a certification.
The first step in becoming a nurse aide is to enroll in a state-approved nurse aide training program. The training program will provide students the knowledge and skills that they will need to take care of the patients properly.
Certified nurse aide training consists of a minimum of 80 hours. Most training programs offer more than the required number. All training program curriculum consists of 50 hours of classroom instructions and 30 hours of supervised clinical practice. Some of the training programs can be completed within 2 to 6 months.
Nursing assistant certification exam
The certification exam in Utah is conducted with the help of D&S Diversified Technologies. All application forms and requirements must be sent to them along with the payment of $70 for the tests. Payments must be in the form of a money order or cashier’s check.
The certification exam is a two part examination that comprises of a 100-item multiple-choice knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation. In the skills evaluation, candidates are required to perform 5 randomly selected procedures and skills. They will only get a certification if they will pass all the tests.
Utah Nurse Aide Registry
The UNAR is a list of all the individuals in Utah who have successfully met the state and federal training and testing requirements. According to the law, only individuals whose names are on the Registry are allowed to work in a state-approved nursing facility.
Employers are required to verify each applicant’s certification prior to hiring them. If you wish to check your own status as a certified nurse aide you can do so by following this link: https://www.dandsdiversifiedtech.com/cgi-bin/CGIRegMaster/login?StateAbbrv=UT&logtype=Candidate.
Maintaining a CNA Certification
To maintain your certification and eligibility to work as a nurse aide you must renew your certification every 2 years before it expires. To qualify for renewal you will be required to show proof of employment within the last 2 years. You must have worked for at least 200 hours in a healthcare facility while under the supervision of a registered nurse.
If your certification expires you can reactivate by immediately taking a competency evaluation exam. If you fail to renew and let your certification expire for more than 2 years, then you will have to undergo retraining and retesting if you wish to work again as a certified nurse aide.
