In the process of becoming a nursing assistant, you are required to undergo training in a CNA training program that is approved by the state. The private contractor that is approved by the Department of Community Health to oversee all the training programs and the Nurse Aide Registry is the Georgia Medical Care Foundation or the GMCF.
These programs are required by the state to offer their students a minimum of 85 hours of training with a minimum of 24 hours of clinical rotations. The training curriculum will be composed of classroom lectures, laboratory skills training, and clinical rotations. A student will not be allowed to proceed into the clinical rotations if he/she does not get a 100% rating in the labs. During your instruction you will learn primary health care skills and how to perform tasks such as: First Aid, CPR, Heimlich Maneuver, range of motion exercises, catheter care, infection control, transporting residents, measuring vital signs, safety measures, nourishment, and recording vitals (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration).
After the completion of a program, the next step is to apply and take on the license exams. The license exams will have two parts where the students must pass them both to get their name entered in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. When applying, the applicant must submit a complete application form and the necessary paperwork such as transcript, high school diploma, fingerprint cards, photo ID, and the payment for the fees.
