What does it mean to work as a nursing assistant? Well, nursing assistants work under the direct supervision of the registered nurses. The tasks that a nursing assistant perform are based on which tasks are delegated by the nurses. These tasks often involve route and basic nursing care such as vital signs taking; helping patients bathe, eat, go to the toilet, change their diapers, clean their immediate surroundings, ambulate and many more.
The tasks that they do might be a bit much for some, but we guarantee you that this job is very rewarding and fulfilling. The people who are most suited for this line of work are those who genuinely want to help other people. Before you can start working as a nursing assistant, you must first enroll in a state-approved course.
To ensure that you will receive quality education and training, you must only enroll in a program that is approved by the state’s Department of Public Health. Approved training programs offer no less than 150 hours. These hours consist of two components: 50 hours of theory and 100 hours of supervised clinical practice.
Once you are through with your training the next step in is to make sure that you have mastered all things that were taught in the training program. You will have to challenge the certification exam to work in a state-approved healthcare facility. The certification exam isn’t just a pencil test; you will also be required to perform random skills in front of a CNA evaluator. If you pass both tests then you will receive a nurse aide certificate from the ATCS.
Your certificate will normally arrive at your mailing address within 10 business days after passing. You can use your certificate when you go job hunting. Even if you show your certificate to your potential employers, they will still verify if your certification as a nursing assistant is valid by contacting the ATCS at (916) 327-2445. You can also check your own status by going online at http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx.
There are some states that have CNA certificates that do not expire. Unfortunately, California isn’t one of them. Your CA-issued certificate must be renewed every 2 years. A notice will be sent out by the ATCS reminding you to renew your certification. If you fail to renew then you will lose your eligibility to work as a certified nursing assistant in a state-approved healthcare facility.
