The OBRA of ’87 requires all aspiring nursing aides to receive proper training and be certified before working as a long-term CNA in a state-approved training course. Although each state has its own requirements for certification, many of them still involve challenging the Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination or the NNAAP exam.
The NNAAP exam was developed to test the competency of aspiring nursing aides in terms of knowledge and skills. It consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a practical skills exam that are taken on the same day. Candidates who are able to pass all the tests will gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry.
Before you can take the NNAAP exam you must first establish eligibility by attending a state-approved training course. These courses in Utah are required to offer a minimum of 80 hours of training. Most of the training courses however, offer more than the required number. The hours are divided into 50 hours of lectures and 30 hours of supervised clinical practice. Students are taught about infection control, interpersonal skills, safety and emergency procedures, patient’s rights and independence, and many more.
Nursing students who wish to become nursing aides are required to successfully complete one semester of nursing school to qualify for the NNAAP exam. Individuals who took up the Fundamentals of Nursing may also apply for the exam.
Once you establish your eligibility, your instructor will normally give you the application forms for the exam; if not, then you can go to www.utahcna.com and download one. All applications for the exam must be submitted to the UNAR along with the payment of $75 for the testing fee. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
CNA certifications in this state are only valid for 2 years. Nursing aides who wish to retain their eligibility to work in state-approved nursing facilities must renew their certification before it expires. You will need to work for at least 200 hours as a paid nursing aide to qualify for renewal. No nursing aide is allowed to continue working with an expired certification.
