Getting a CNA certification in South Carolina is one of the best ways to enter the medical field without spending too much time and expenses in education and training. The training usually takes 6-12 weeks to complete and costs much less compared to other career trainings. To be certified, you will have to be admitted into the Nurse Aide Registry.
If you do not have any prior background experience in the field of health, then the first thing for you to do is to enroll in a state-approved CNA program. By completing a training program, you will become eligible to apply for the state examinations. Your training will consist of 100 hours and will be divided into lectures and at least 40 hours of clinical training. You will be taught nursing concepts like infection control, mental health, and be trained in how to properly assist the patients with their daily activities.
Nursing students, RN graduates, military-trained medics, and foreign-trained nursing students may also apply for the exams. To be eligible to apply without any additional training, they must have completed a program that meets the standards of the federal and state. To make sure, they will need to contact the Department of Health and Human Services at (803) 898-2587 or email them at scnar@dhhs.state.sc.us.
The state competency exams are offered by Pearson VUE with the help of the NACES. It consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a skills evaluation. Failure in any part of the exam will result in a failed examination. To retake, the candidate must reapply for the exam. During retakes, the candidate will only need to retake the part that he failed. Every candidate will be given 3 attempts to pass. If you fail after the third attempt, you will have to complete another program before you can reapply again.
If you pass all the tests, you can expect your CNA card in the mail within a few days after passing the exams. If you want to view your record on the Nurse Aide Registry, you may go online at https://www.asisvcs.com/services/registry/search_generic.asp?CPCat=0741NURSE. A CNA certification is only valid for 24 months. To be eligible for renewal, you will need to work as a paid nursing assistant for a minimum of 8 hours every 24 months.
