The first step to becoming a nursing assistant is to finish a training program. You can choose one of the programs listed on this page. The program must be certified by the state for you to become eligible to take the license exams. You will only be allowed to take the license exams if you have finished the training program with the minimum amount of hours required by the state. Currently instruction must have 100 hours or more that includes at least 24 hours of clinical skills training using common health care procedures.
After you undergo proper training from a state-approved training program you will need to pass all the tests in the competency evaluation exams to become certified. Once your name is on the registry, it will only be valid for up to two years. Its expiration date is on the 28th day of the holder’s birth month. To be eligible for renewal, you must have worked for a minimum of 8 hours with pay while under the supervision of a registered nurse. The Registry will send you a notice a few weeks before your expiration date. If you submitted your application and wish to know its status, you are free to call the testing office with the number provided above.
