The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to enroll in a state-approved training program. Getting the right training has always been an important step in starting a career, especially when it involves the health of others.
There are different ways to get the training that you need. One of the best ways is to enroll in a state-certified CNA training course. You should make sure that their curriculum is approved by the state of Tennessee and they provide the necessary 75 hours of instruction. These courses are offered by many different educational institutions such as colleges, nursing homes, and vocational schools. There are also some institutions that offer affordable or free training such as the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross is authorized by the Tennessee Higher Education Committee to provide nursing assistant training.
To enroll in a program you must also be able to pass the background check by both the federal and the state. In addition you will need to submit an application, and copies of a photo identification, social security card, and class transcripts in order to apply for the state license exams. Completing the necessary 75 hours of instruction training offered by them will make you eligible to apply for the certification exam.
The certification exam will test your competency if you are good enough to work independently as a nursing assistant. If you pass all of its tests, your name will be added to the Nurse Aide Registry and you will receive your certification. This exam consists of a written/oral exam and a skills evaluation, which are conducted by the D&S Diversified Technologies.
You can apply for the exams by either sending the application packet or by going to their website at www.hdmaster.com. When you apply online, you will have to use your MasterCard or Visa to pay for the exam fees. Once your application has been processed, you will receive an exam date. If you cannot attend on your scheduled date and wish to cancel or reschedule, you must inform D&S DT at least 60 days before your exam. You are entitled to one free reschedule. All cancellations must be made at least 24 hours prior to the exam date. Failure to do this will result in a $25 cancellation fee.
The license exams are made up of a manual skills test and a written test. For the manual skills portion you will need to demonstrate five of the proficiencies you previously learned during class instruction. For the written test you will need to score at least 70% to pass.
If you pass all the tests, your name will then be added to the Nurse Aide Registry. CNA certifications in this state are only valid for 24 months. To keep your name on the Registry, you must renew it before it expires. To renew, you must be able to provide proof of employment in the form of a pay stub, a letter from your employer that is notarized, or a printout of the payroll. Your working hours must total to a minimum of 8 hours and must be done while under the supervision of a registered nurse.
