The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to learn all the necessary knowledge and skills to be a competent CNA. That is why you must enroll in a state-approved CNA training program. It is the Aide and Technician Certification Section that is in charge of approving training programs.
As a nurse aide student, you will be spending your time in lectures and skills training. These programs will teach you all that things that you will need to handle different situations that you may encounter in the clinical area. CNA training consists of 150 hours of classroom instructions and practical skills training. Students are placed under the care of a qualified instructor who will guide them in every step of the way.
Students will be taught different concepts like infection control, medical terminologies, human anatomy, personal care, basic nursing procedures, safety and emergency care, and many more. Most training programs offered in California take 2 to 6 months to complete. For more information about valid schools you can contact the (TPRU) Training Program Review Unit at 916) 552-8873.
Completing an approved training program will make you eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination. You have to keep in mind that there are other requirements, like passing the background checks and paying the exam fees, that must be done before you can take the test. If you feel that you are not yet ready, you have 24 months to pass the program. Your school can help you schedule a time to take the State of California Department of Health N.A.T.A.P. exam.
This examination is conducted with the help of Pearson VUE. It consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a random skills evaluation. If you pass all the tests then you will get a state-issued CNA certificate. Every applicant is given 2 more chances to try again if they fail the first time. If they still fail for the third time, then they are required to retrain before they will be allowed to take it again.
You can use the certificate to prove that you are a competent nursing assistant when you go job hunting. Employers will only hire nursing assistants who are certified by the ATCS. Before hiring an applicant, they are required to visit http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx and verify the applicant’s certificate.
California offers reciprocity to certified nursing assistants from other states. The state allows them to work in California without any need for further training or testing. To be eligible for reciprocity the applicant must have a current certification as well as a clean record. Those who have records of patient abuse, negligence or misappropriation of their property may not be allowed to work in a state-approved nursing facility.
