A person can only work in California as a nursing assistant if he or she is certified by the state’s Aide and Technician Certification Section of the L&C Program. If you have never been certified before as a nursing assistant, then the only way for you to become a CNA is by passing the certification exam.
The certification exam is a two part examination. The first part is the multiple-choice knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation. Both exams are given on the same day; candidates must plan their day accordingly. All those who wish to take the certification exam are required to complete a state-approved training program.
Completing a CNA training program is one of the best ways to become qualified for the exam. Training consists of 150 hours of lectures supervised clinical practice. Depending on the program you choose, your training can last from about 2 to 6 months. Those who took up courses on the Fundamentals of Nursing are also allowed to apply.
After your training, the next step is to submit your Initial Application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070503.pdf) to the CDPH, along with a copy of your completed Request for Live Scan Services to finalize your eligibility. Once the CDPH approves your application, you can then submit your application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070508.pdf) for the certification exam to your local Regional Testing Center.
The testing fee for both exams is $90. This should be submitted with the application form to the testing center in the form of a money order, cashier’s check, or company check. There is an additional payment of $15 for individuals who chose to take the oral test. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
To get certified, candidates must pass all the tests. In case of a failed exam, all candidates are allowed to reapply and retake the tests they failed, twice. Since their training is only valid up to 2 years after completing their training program, their reapplications are only valid within that time. If a candidate fails for the 3rd time, he will be required to complete another 150-hour CNA program.
To help you prepare for the exam, you can go to www.pearsonvue.com or www.cdph.ca.gov and download a copy of the Candidate Handbook. The handbook contains vital information regarding the certification exam. There are also some sample tests that you can practice on.
