The demand for nursing assistants in the state of Tennessee is still on the rise. Because of this shortage, there are a lot of jobs waiting for CNAs. According to the law, only those who are listed in the Nurse Aide Registry will be allowed to work in certified nursing facilities.
If you want to become a nursing assistant, the first thing that you need to do is to attend and finish a 75-hour training program that is approved by the state’s Department of Health. You will learn in these programs the knowledge and skills needed to take care of the patients as a nursing assistant. Approved programs are required to include in their curriculum at least 25 nursing skills. During the training, the students will be placed under the care of a qualified clinical instructor.
After you complete your training, you can then apply for the CNA evaluation exam, which is conducted by the Headmaster Testing Service. This examination is divided into a 75-item multiple-choice knowledge test and a random clinical skills test. Candidates are given a maximum of 90 minutes to answer all the questions in the knowledge test and half an hour to perform all the nursing skills in the second portion of the exam. In the practical portion, you will be asked to perform at least 5 nursing skills with proficiency. In the written part, you will need to get a score of 75% to pass.
The content of the knowledge test will be taken from the following areas:
• Safety
• Personal care
• Infection control
• Care impaired
• Mental health
• Resident’s rights
• Communication
• Data Collection
• Basic Nursing Skills
• Roles and Responsibilities of a CNA
• Disease Process
• Aging Process
If you want to have the complete list of the nursing skills that may come out of the exams, please download a copy of the CNA Candidate Handbook by visiting www.hdmaster.com.
If you pass both the exams, your name will be entered into the NAR. Your CNA card will be mailed to your address within 4-6 weeks after you pass. You will be eligible to work in a nursing facility as a nursing assistant for 2 years. If you wish to continue, you must work for at least 8 hours every 2 years and renew your certificate before it expires.
