There are different routes to determine the eligibility of an individual to become a nursing assistant. These routes will indicate whether the individual must take the competency evaluation exams or may directly be accepted into the New York State Nursing Home Nurse Aide Registry.
If the candidate chooses the first route, he will need to complete a state-certified CNA training program and pass the evaluation exams afterwards. The program must be approved by the NYDOH, to be eligible to apply for the exams. These programs take 75 hours to complete and consist of lectures and practical skills training. The candidate must apply and take the exams within 2 years from the date he completed his training.
The second route is for those who are already a registered nursing assistant but is currently registered in a different state. When applying for reciprocity, the applicant will no longer be required to undergo any retraining and retesting, provided that he meets the requirements. Applicants for reciprocity will need to provide the completed application form (https://www.prometric.com/en-us/clients/Nurseaide/Documents/New%20York/NYNARegistryApp20111006.pdf) and a copy of their CNA license and the necessary fees. Reciprocity fees cost a total of $50.
The third route is available for those who are nursing graduates that were trained in the U.S. Since their training is similar to nursing assistants, they will no longer be required to undergo any additional training. Since they were not able to obtain a professional license in the medical field they will still need to take the license exams. The necessary application materials will need to be sent to the New York State Department of Health at the Empire State Plaza, Albany, New York.
RNs and LPNs may also become a nursing assistant if they want to, which is what the fourth route is all about. For RNs and LPNs there will no longer be any required additional training or testing. Applicants through this route are directly entered in the NAR once they are found eligible. Like those applying through reciprocity, they will need to show proof of their training and experience to the Department of Health.
