If you wish to work as a CNA in South Carolina, then you must first gain entry into the SC Nurse Aide Registry. Only individuals who are able to meet both the federal and state requirements for training and testing will be allowed into the NAR.
If you have no previous background as a nursing aide, then you will have to pass both parts of the NNAAP exam. Before you can apply, you must first establish eligibility by completing a state-approved 100-hour training program. If you have already trained as a nursing aide outside the state but has still not taken the NNAAP exam, you will need to call the Department of Health and Human Services to check whether you can apply for the exam or not.
The NNAAP exam consists of a written test and a skills evaluation. Those who may have some difficulty with written English can apply to take the oral version, which is offered in either English or Spanish. If this is your first time to take the examination, you will have to take the two parts. Those who are currently employed or have received a work offer from a Medicaid nursing facility will not be charged for the testing fees. For those who are not, must pay $101 in the form of a money order, Pearson VUE voucher, or company check.
Once the payment has been made, you can expect in your mail Authorization to Test Notice within 48 hours. This notice must be kept since it contains important information about the examination. If you fail to receive this card within 10 days, please call the NACES at (800) 273-517.
If you cannot take the exam on your scheduled exam date, you may cancel or reschedule. To avoid any penalties, you must inform NACES at least 5 business days before the exam date. If you fail to do this, your fee will not be refunded nor will it be transferred to another exam date.
During the exam date, it is important that you arrive at the testing area at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time. Latecomers will not be allowed to take the test. To get your certification, you must pass all the tests. If you do pass, your name will be added to the NAR and you will receive your CNA card, which will be valid for 24 months.
