The only way for an aspiring nursing aide candidate to gain entry on the Nurse Aide Registry is by challenging the CNA certification exams after he/she completes a state-certified training program. One can establish eligibility to apply for the certification exams by either attending a school that’s approved by the Pennsylvania State Department of Education. However, those who apply for the certification exams as nursing students will only be given one attempt to take and pass the exams.
One advantage that CNA training schools have over nursing schools is their affordability. Most of the training facilities that offer instruction cost around $350 to $1,500. A lot of the training facilities will also offer grants to those who are working while they train to become nursing aides. A candidate who is already working for a certified long-term care facility prior to enrolling in a training program may not be charged for training and testing fees. All payments will be paid for by the employer.
There are plenty of schools that offer such courses in Pennsylvania. While enrolled you must complete instruction in both lectures and clinical duties to complete the program. Applicants must be at least 16 years old to apply and pass a physical exam and state and federal criminal background checks.
Nursing aide curriculum is required by the state to last at least 80 hours. This can take around 3 to 4 months to complete depending on their curriculum schedule. All training programs are comprised of supervised clinical practice and classroom/laboratory works, which are both done concurrently. One can find training programs offered by hospitals, nursing homes, community colleges, high schools, private training centers, and government organizations.
One can apply immediately for the CNA exams right after completing training. Testing is scheduled through the American Red Cross. You can find the nearest location to take the exams by calling them at 800-795-2350. The exams consist of a written exam and a practical skills demonstration. There is also an oral exam available for those with reading disabilities. The exams are scheduled and conducted by the American Red Cross with the help of Pearson VUE. Candidates can download a copy of the application forms from the Pearson VUE’s website at www.pearsonvue.com and submit them to the ARC upon completing all requirements.
A confirmation letter will be sent by the ARC within 5 days after receiving the application forms. Don’t forget to include the $102 payment fee for both tests or else your application won’t get processed. If you do not receive a confirmation letter in the mail within 10 days after submitting, please call the ARC immediately at (800) 795-2350.
If you’re able to pass both tests within 2 years after completing your training, then your name will be placed on the Nurse Aide Registry. The NAR will also send you a Certification/Registration card to show that you have met the federal and state training and testing requirements. Do not tamper with the card to avoid jeopardizing your status on the registry. You can check your status as a certified nursing aide by going to www.pulseportal.com.
