Certified nursing assistants in Vermont are better known as licensed nurse aides or LNAs. Like any other state, a person can only work as a nurse aide if his name is on the Nurse Aide Registry. The state’s Board of Nursing is responsible for monitoring and keeping the Registry up to date. If you wish to gain entry into the NAR, then you must complete a state-approved training program and take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination (NNAAP exam).

students-at-college-lectureLNA training programs are offered by numerous institutions and schools such as hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living centers, high schools, private institutions, government organization, community colleges and many more.

Requirements for LNA Training

To be a nurse aide you must be at least 16 years old. Many of the programs do not require any educational prerequisite so long as you are able to read, write, speak, and understand English since most of the patients and healthcare workers will be using the language. However, there are also some programs that will only accept candidates who have a high school diploma or a GED certificate. Before you even consider becoming a healthcare worker you must make sure that you will be able to pass the federal and state criminal background checks. You must also be mentally and physically fit as well as free from any communicable diseases.

CNA Training

Training programs in Vermont are required to consist of a minimum of 75 hours of lab works and classroom lessons and an additional 30 hours of supervised clinical practice. Students will learn about infection control, patient rights and independence, safety and emergency protocols, communication skills, basic nursing skills, and personal care.

NNAAP Exam

Completing an approved training program will qualify you to apply for the NNAAP exam. Nursing students and graduates can also apply if they wish to pursue a career as a nurse assistant. Registered nurses from Vermont can also apply. Before they submit their application they must however, request for an Authorization to Test from the state’s Board of Nursing.

The NNAAP exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates have the option to take either a written or oral test for the knowledge test. If they pass both tests their names will be forwarded to the BON, where they will enter their names into the NAR.

Growing Opportunities

There are numerous opportunities for those who are pursuing a career in this field. Although the demand for LNAs in Vermont might not be as high as other states such as California, they can still transfer and work in other states by applying for a certification through endorsement, provided that the state they choose offers reciprocity.
