Becoming a nursing assistant is one of the best ways to enter the medical field. With the high demand for the profession, newly certified nursing assistants can easily find work. An advantage that this profession has over other careers is its practicality. You can become a CNA quickly at a very affordable price.
The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to enroll in a state accepted program. This program will teach you the knowledge and skills needed to function as a nursing assistant. An approved program is required to teach at least 25 nursing skills in their curriculum. When you are looking for a program, make sure that the one you have chosen is certified. Many of the training institutions will require you to be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or a GED, have completed all your immunizations, and pass the national background check for criminal records. After your training is complete you will need to apply for the competency exam which will be based on the skills you learned during your training.
The certification exam consists of a 75-item knowledge test that may be taken as a written or oral exam, and a practical skills test. Both of these exams are taken on the same day at approved testing sites. Some of the regional testing sites have the option to give online examination. In this type, computers are used in both parts of the exam. The advantage of taking an online exam is that the results are normally released the next day. To know more about the exams, please download a copy of the Candidate Handbook (http://www.hdmaster.com/testing/cnatesting/tennessee/tnformpages/tnforms/TNJan2013CandidateHandbookv10.0.pdf).
To get into the NAR, you must pass all the tests within 3 attempts and within 2 years after completing your training. Once your name is listed on the NAR, the Registry will then send your certificate within 4-6 weeks to your address. You are required to renew your certificate every 2 years to remain on the Registry. No CNA is allowed to work with an expired certificate. If you wish to work again as a nursing assistant after your certificate has expired, you must complete another state-approved program and challenge the competency exam again.
The state of Tennessee allows for CNAs that come from most others states to apply for reciprocity to be able to take the license exams without re-taking class instruction. To do so they must have an active license and pass the criminal background check. If the nurse aide comes from Florida or North Carolina, then they must undergo retraining in the state and take the state license exams.
