This is the best time for you to get certification to enter the medical field. You should consider becoming a CNA in the state of Tennessee, since there is current demand, and job security. This type of job is increasing in demand as the population ages and more people need help with their daily activities, especially when it comes to their health. As a nursing assistant, you will be taking care of patients with the use of the basic nursing skills that you will learn in the training program.
To work as a nursing aide in Tennessee, you must have a certificate for the state registry. To get a nursing aide certificate you will have to undergo a state-approved training program, pass the competency exam, as well as the federal and state background check for criminal records.
Approved programs are required to offer at least 75 hours of training. These hours are divided into classroom lectures and at least 16 hours of clinical practice. To enroll, you must be at least 18 years old, possess a high school diploma or a GED, have completed all your immunizations, pass the background check and the TB test. At the end of your training, you will receive a certificate of completion, which you will need when you apply for the competency exam.
The competency exam in Tennessee is conducted by the D&S DT. It is divided into two parts. The first part is the 75-item multiple-choice knowledge test. This is normally given as a written test but an oral test may be taken instead by those who have problems with reading English. You will be given a total of 90 minutes to answer all the questions. The second portion of the exam is the clinical skills tests. In this portion, you will be asked to perform 5 nursing skills in a given scenario in front of an evaluator. Only 4 of the skills will be random since the first one will be on proper hand-washing. You will have 30 minutes to perform all the skills.
To get into the Nurse Aide Registry, you must pass all the tests. Once your name is listed, you can expect your CNA card in the mail within 4-6 weeks after you pass. Employers are required to verify their applicant’s certification before hiring them. They will only hire those whose names are found in the Registry. If you wish to check your own record, you may visit http://health.state.tn.us/Licensure/default.aspx or call the Registry’s Automated Phone Response System number at (800) 778-4504.
