A nursing assistant helps the patients by performing procedures and assisting in their daily activities. The tasks that they do depend on the tasks that are delegated by the registered nurse. These tasks are mainly repetitively done to the patient and do not involve any ongoing evaluation of their present condition.
Since there are two types of nursing assistants in North Carolina, one being an advance degree (nursing aides II), the nurse must also consider the types of tasks that he delegates to the nursing assistant. Nursing assistant I are mainly involved in helping in the patient’s ADLs, promoting safety, assist in nutrition, do infection control, take vital signs, apply heat and cold packs, and do coughing and breathing exercises.
A nursing assistant II may do all those procedures mentioned but are more focused in assisting the other members of the healthcare teams in procedures such as oxygen therapy, discontinuing IV therapy, doing oral/nasogastric infusion, tracheotomy care, ostomy care, and use of catheters.
Before you can become a nursing assistant II, you must first be listed into the NA I Registry. This means that you will have to complete a 75-hour-state-approved training program and then pass the license exams. Once you have your CNA license, you can then enroll in a nursing assistant II training program. After the completion of your training, you will then need to take the NA II license exams in order to be entered into the NA II Registry, which is run by the N.C. Board of Nursing.
If you do not want to become a nursing assistant II but still want an advance certificate, you can try to become a either a medication aide or a geriatric aide. These professions will still require you to undergo the necessary training and then challenge the competency exam afterwards.
