One way of becoming a nursing assistant in the state of New York is to be able to pass the competency evaluation exam. Everything about the exams and other important information about becoming a nursing assistant can be found in the NYS Home Nurse Aide Certification Handbook, which can be downloaded at https://www.prometric.com/en-us/clients/Nurseaide/Documents/New%20York/NY%20NA%20Manual_20120703%20Web%20version.pdf. Training programs are encouraged to review the important things found on the handbook with their candidates.
To avoid any additional stress when taking the exams, it is best to come prepared. Nursing assistant candidates are highly reminded that they bring the following items to the exam:
• The appropriate IDs. Two forms of identification are required. These may be in the form of a driver’s license, alien registration card, passport, or proof of employment from the facility that the candidate is testing in.
• Admission letter. This is for those who are taking the exams at a regional testing site.
• Two number 2 pencils with erasers (pencils must already be sharpened).
• A watch with a second hand (this is to be used during the clinical skills exam).
Since the second part of the exams is always the clinical skills tests, every candidate is reminded wear pants, shirt with sleeves, socks, and flat, nonskid shoes that have enclosed toes. In the scenarios, there will be a resident or patient that the candidate will perform the skills on. The role of the resident/patient will be played by other candidates.
If the candidate has requested to take the oral exam, the candidate must be certain that he/she is able to operate a standard portable CD player since it will be used to listen to the exam questions. If the candidate has any questions with its operation, it is encouraged that they feel comfortable asking the evaluators.
