If you are planning on joining the medical team by being a nursing assistant, you will need to be certified first. The main task of the certification process is passing the license exams, which consists of a written/oral exam and a skills demonstration of selected nursing skills. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services contracted Pearson VUE to help conduct, score, and report the results of the license exams.
With the new system that Pearson VUE has created, applicants are now able to apply through online. They can also now pay for the fees using their credit or debit cards. Aside from the convenience of the application process, you can also schedule the date of your exams.
If there are any conflicts or problems with your scheduled date and you wish to either reschedule or cancel the exams, you will need to inform Pearson VUE at least 9 working days before the start of the exams. You are only given one chance to change or cancel your schedule for free. If you have to change it again, you will be subjected to charges.
One advantage of completing a state-approved training program before you take the exams is that you will be allowed to work temporarily as a nursing assistant in a nursing home. This temporary condition is only up to 4 months.
If you are able to pass all the tests, your name will be entered on the registry and you will receive your CNA license. Your status on the registry will remain active for up to 2 years. During that time, if you wish to keep it active you will have to work as a paid nursing assistant for a minimum of 8 hours. Failure to renew your license will cause it to expire. An expired license can no longer be renewed therefore, you must retrain and retest in order to become a CNA again.
