Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work as a health care worker in Pennsylvania? If you have, then know that you are not alone. A lot of people have thought about starting a career in this field; however, many of them just don’t know how. One of the best ways to enter this line of work is to be a nurse aide.
What’s a CNA?
Certified nurse aides are entry-level health care providers who work under the supervision of registered nurses. They help provide nursing-related care to patients who are living in various long-term care facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes.
What do you need to become one?
The OBRA of 1987 requires all nurse aides to be properly trained and certified in order to work in any health care setting for more than 120 days. While trying to meet these two requirements, you’ll also undergo federal and state background checks, and medical and physical background checks.
Where can you learn how to be a qualified nurse aide?
Because of the increasing number of persons who are now trying to get certified as nurse aides, health care facilities and training institutions are now offering nurse aide training programs. The Department of Education was tasked to monitor these programs to ensure that aspiring nurse aides get the training instructions that they need.
What does CNA training consist of?
Approved school training is divided into two parts, which are both done concurrently. All programs comprise of at least 37.5 hours of clinical practice and 42.5 hours of classroom lectures. During the duration of the clinical practice, students are placed under the supervision of a qualified Instructor. Students are not allowed to do any nursing skills without the knowledge or presence of the instructor.
Class instruction will teach you the primary skills and knowledge you will need while working as a nursing assistant. Some of the skills you will learn include: patient vital signs, resident housekeeping, postmortem care, infection precautions, transporting residents, catheter care, nourishment/feeding, toileting, bathing, residents rights, restorative care, and nursing theory. Classes are coordinated by a registered nurse and teach both theoretical instruction and provide actual hands-on practice in a nursing facility setting.
What’s next after training?
After training, all that you have learned will be put to the tests by taking the CNA certification exams. You are allowed up to 24 months to pass both exams after completion of your course training .These exams were designed to test whether an aspiring nurse aide is competent to work as a full-time nurse aide. It consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a practical skills exam. You’ll need to pass both parts to get certified. Applicants are allowed three attempts to pass both test. Those who fail to pass within this amount of tries are required to retake a training program.
What happens if you pass both tests?
The names of the candidates who pass both tests are entered into the Nurse Aide Registry. This registry contains every nurse aide who has shown that he or she has what it takes to work independently. Only nurse aides who are on the NAR are given CNA certifications and are allowed to work in a nursing facility that receives Medicare/Medicaid reimbursements. Entry on to the PA nurse aide registry is given for a 24 month period. You must submit verification of time spent on the job to remain listed past this amount of time.
Reimbursements
Speaking of reimbursements, if you manage to find work within 12 months after getting certified, you will be given a refund of your training and testing expenses. The refunds will be on a pro rate basis. You will receive half of your reimbursements when you complete 130 hours of working as a CNA and get the other once you complete another 130 hours. You can contact the Pennsylvania State Bureau of Quality & Provider Management at (717) 783-7377 if you have any questions.
