Becoming a nursing assistant is one of the best ways to start a career in healthcare. As a nursing assistant, you will help take care of patients by performing nursing care that is delegated by the nurses. You will perform routine and basic procedures like to assist in their daily activities like bathing, dressing, cleaning their immediate living quarters, exercising, ambulating, and even assist in emergency procedures when needed.
The first step that you must do is to find and enroll in a state-approved training program. When you enroll in a program, you will learn the knowledge and skills that you will use to take care of the patients depending on their individual needs. You will spend at least 75 hours of training in the classroom and in the clinical area for you practical training. Classes are required to be coordinated by an experienced RN and teach basic health care procedures and components defined by state and federal regulations, along with a clinical component to teach you hands-on skill proficiencies. Depending on which program you enroll in, it may take you 3-4 months to complete your training.
When you complete your training, you will receive a certificate of completion, which is one of the requirements when you apply for the certification exam. Passing the certification exam is the only way for you to gain entry into the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. According to the law, only CNAs who are listed in the Registry will be allowed to work in a certified nursing home.
This exam is not only exclusive to those who completed a nursing assistant training program. An individual who took military education as a medic or a corpsman can also apply by completing and submitting Form DD-214.Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses will also have to take this exam to get on the Nurse Aide Registry. They will have to show their transcript of records and diplomas to show proof of their training and education.
The certification exam consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation. You will have 90 minutes to answer all 75 questions in the knowledge test and 30 minutes to perform all 5 requested nursing skills. During the testing you will be required to demonstrate five of the skills you learned in class. You will also need to score a 70% rating or better on the written exam. Once you have passed you will be included for 24 months on the nurse aide registry. You must pass both of the exams to get into the NAR. If you fail in one test, you can reapply and take the test you failed. You can only retake the exam twice. If you still fail, you will have to complete another training program before you can reapply.
CNA certificates are only valid for 24 months. You keep your certificate valid in order to maintain your eligibility to work as a nursing assistant. You will need to renew your certification before it expires. One of the requirements for renewal is that you must have worked for at least 8 hours within the last 24 months.
