If you want to get a CNA license, then you must first decide on which training course you would like to enroll in. This can be a troublesome task for some since there are a number of training programs to choose from. When selecting a program to enroll in, remember to choose only those that are approved by the state since it will ensure you eligibility to take the exams afterwards. These programs are different medical facility like hospitals, nursing homes, and even community colleges and private training centers.
In order to complete a training program, you must be able to meet the required 75 hours of training and pass the final exams. Your training will consist of lectures, laboratory work, and clinical training. During that time, you will be guided and supervised by qualified instructors. You will cover topics such as communication skills, patient’s rights and independence, safety and emergency procedures, basic care, and different medical terms.
If you complete the training, you will then be required to take the license exams. You are allowed to retake the exams up to three times. After the third time, you will be mandated to retrain before taking the exam again.
The high demand for nursing assistants has also opened job opportunities for registered nurses and other health professionals. A qualified instructor is a registered nurse who has a minimum of 2 years of nursing experience. One of those years must be work experience in a long-term care facility. The registered nurse must also have previous experience in teaching adults or has taken up a course in teaching them. Other professions such as nutritionists, physical therapists, and pharmacists may also help by becoming supplemental instructors.
A record of your successful completion of training will be sent to the registry within 30 days. After which, you may then apply to take the license exams. When applying, aside from the application fee, you must also submit other documents such as fingerprint cards, social security card, and the payment for the testing, which is $120 for first time takers.
If you pass the license exam, your name will be added to the registry along with other information. Other information included is your address, social security number, date of birth, the date that you became certified, and your place of employment. If you changed any of those, you must inform the registry, especially when you changed your name or address.
