Those who work in the healthcare industry as health care providers have stable jobs since health care is always a necessity. The demand for entry-level healthcare professionals in Pennsylvania such as nursing aides is constantly high. If you are looking for a job change, then why not become a nursing aide?
Nursing aides are found in various health care settings, including the patient’s own home. They work under the supervision of registered nurses and help provide nursing care to the patients. The tasks that they perform are based on what are delegated by nurses. Since nursing aides are in constant contact with the patients, they are required by law to be properly trained and certified.
The certification process for individuals who have not received any kind of health care training is to enroll in a CNA class that is approved by the state’s Department of Education. Nursing aide training comprises of both practical training and classroom/lab instructions. Depending on where you enroll, it can take you 3 to 4 months to complete your training. You will need to submit a background check, TB test, immunization record, and physical exam records before being allowed to enroll. Once you are taking a class you will be taught both theoretical health care fundamentals as well as practical hands-on skills training.
As soon as you finish the class requirement, your next step is to apply for the certification exams, which are conducted by the American Red Cross. These exams will test your knowledge and skills on how competent you are as a nursing aide. You will need to pass both tests in order to prove that you have what it takes to meet the federal and state’s standards.
Every applicant has three (3) opportunities to pass both tests. These chances are only valid for up to two years after completing their training. When you retake the certification exam, you will only need to retake and pay for the exam that you failed. If you use up all your chances or fail to pass within the 2 year period, then you will have to undergo retraining.
If you do pass both tests, then your name will be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry. This registry contains all the names of individuals who are allowed to work in a federally approved nursing facility. Employers will always check every applicant’s name if it is on the NAR before hiring; even if the applicant shows his/her Registry Card.
Once your name is listed on the registry, it will be your responsibility to inform the registry if you ever change your name, address, or social security number. Failure to inform the NAR may threaten your status on the NAR. You can inform the registry by using the Change of Name/Address form, which you can get from www.pearsonvue.com. You can call (800) 852-0518 if you have any questions regarding this matter.
If you are a nursing graduate or a student that have taken nursing course in college, a vocational school or the military you may be able to apply for reciprocity. Those who qualify are not required to undergo training to be able to apply for the exams. You can call Pearson VUE, the company that handles inquires about registry requirements at 1-800-852-0518 to learn more.
