The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to receive the proper education and training by enrolling in a certified nursing assistant training course. The Department of Health is the one that is responsible for approving and disapproving programs in South Dakota.
There are certain requirements that a program must meet in order to be certified such as using an approved training curriculum. The SDDOH has approved several different forms of curriculum that were developed by different authorities such as the American Red Cross, the South Dakota Health Care Association, and We Care Online – the curriculum approved for online courses.
Certified programs are required to offer their students no less than 75 hours of training. It should include theories and at least 16 hours of clinical practice. Before a student is sent to the clinical area for the practical training, he must first learn about infection control, mental health, basic and personal care, communication and interpersonal skills, safety and emergency protocols, and patients’ rights and independence.
To enroll, you must be at least 18 years old, be physically and mentally healthy, have a high school diploma or a General Education Degree, completed all immunizations, get a negative TB test result, and be able to pass the national background check for criminal records.
After the training, the next big step is to apply for and pass the state competency evaluation exam. This exam consists of a written exam and a skills test. You can take the examination online. It will be made up of two parts, where you must pass both parts to get your license. An oral exam may also be taken instead for the knowledge exam if the tester has difficulty in reading English. If you want to take the written exam, you must send a letter of request when you apply. If you need any special considerations for the exam, the request must also be made when you apply.
If you are able to pass both the knowledge and skills test, you will gain entry into the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. Once entered, you will also become certified. Your certification will remain valid for 24 months. You will also need to work for at least 8 hours under the supervision of a registered nurse to be eligible for renewal. For any questions, please call the South Dakota Board of Nursing at (605) 362-2760.
