Becoming a nursing assistant is considered to be one of the best ways for you to get experience working in the health care industry today. Due to the high demand for workers in this field, new graduates will have no problems in finding a job as soon as they get their name on the Registry.
One way to get your name on the NA Registry is to complete a CNA training program and then pass the license exams. While enrolled in training candidates will learn a variety of knowledge and skills that will benefit them when they take the competency exams and on the job. There are certain requirements in order to be accepted to a class program. Currently these are that you are 18 years old, or involved in a high school health occupation class, be free of being guilty of certain classifications, and not listed on the ESL disqualification list.
Class consists of 75 hours of instruction going over theoretical health care procedures, and 100 hours of clinical practice using the tasks commonly used in the occupation. Some of the primary skills you will learn are: measuring and recording vital signs, transporting patients, use of nurse aide equipment such as a transfer belt, housekeeping, infection control, safety procedures, dealing with the hearing impaired, catheter care, toileting, performing range of motion exercises, nourishment, mental care, grooming, and communication. After training you will need to schedule a time and test location for the competency exam so you can become actively listed on the state registry for nursing assistants.
It is possible to challenge the examination directly by receiving a letter of approval from the MO Department of Health and Senior Services. Those who opt to pursue this option will have to apply and be accepted and are only allowed one chance to pass the examination. Those who fail to pass are then required to join a training course that has been recommended by the state. You can call the office to learn more about how to qualify at 573-526-5686.
Another option to get onto the Registry is to apply for reciprocity or Interstate Endorsement. This option is available for only those who are already a Registered NA in a different state. Those who want to apply through reciprocity must have worked for at least 8 hours within the past 2 years and must still have a valid license/certification.
