California is one of the best places to work as a nursing assistant. Its demand for CNAs is one of the highest in the country. The process of becoming a nursing assistant is quick and easy if you know what to do. Like most states, the certification process involves completing a state-approved training program and taking the certification exam.
CNA training programs in California consist of 150 hours of both lectures and supervised clinical practice. Enrolling in a training program is one of the best ways to become a CNA. Certified nurse aide programs are there to teach all there is to know about how to become a competent health care worker. You will learn different concepts such as infection control, body mechanics, basic nursing procedures, long-term care patients, personal care, and many more.
Upon enrolling in a state-approved program you will be required to get fingerprinted for the criminal background checks. Background checks in California are done through Live Scan Services. Criminal background checks were made mandatory because of the numerous incidences that involved healthcare providers. A copy of your completed Request for Live Scan Services must be sent to the ATCS prior to the start of the clinical rotation.
Completing an approved program will make you eligible to apply for the certification exam. Registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, and military trained medics are allowed to apply for the exam without the need for further training.
The certification exam is divided into two parts – a written test and a skills exam. Candidates who have trouble reading can request for an oral version of the written test for an additional payment of $15. Candidates must pass all the tests to get a nurse aide certification.
Certified nursing assistants from other states are welcome to transfer and work in California. Before they start working, they must first apply for reciprocity. This will allow them to get a certification that is issued in this state. To be eligible, applicants must have a clean record and a current certification. They will be required to provide proof of their training and experience such as a certificate of completion, transcript of records, or a diploma.
