No individual is allowed to work as a nursing aide in California without an Aide and Technician Certification Section or ATCS-issued certification. Employers in this state are required to verify each applicant’s certification before hiring. To get a CNA certification, you can either challenge the NNAAP exam or apply for reciprocity.
The process of reciprocity is unfortunately only for persons who are already certified as nursing aides, but in a different state. When applying it is important that they still have an active certification and were able to maintain a clean record. CNAs who are listed in the Abuse Registry are not allowed to work in a CDPH-approved nursing home.
Applicants are required to provide proof of education and training to the CDPH, as well as the completed initial application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070503.pdf). They must also provide proof of employment as a paid nursing aide within the last 2 years if they have been certified for more than 2 years.
For those who have not yet been certified as a nursing aide, their only way to work as a CNA in California is to challenge the NNAAP exam. The NNAAP exam is conducted by Pearson VUE at approved regional testing centers. It consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a practical skills test. Candidates who have difficulty in reading can request to take the oral version of the knowledge test for an additional fee of $15.
All NNAAP challengers are required to complete a CNA training program. When searching for a program to attend, please choose one that is approved by the state’s Department of Public Health. These programs can be found offered by nursing homes, hospitals, vocational and technical colleges, private training centers, and even some websites. Approved programs are required to offer a minimum of 150 hours of training, which are divided into classroom lessons and supervised practical training.
To get certified through testing, candidates must pass both parts of the exam. Each candidate is given 3 attempts to pass within 2 years after completing training. If the candidate fails to get certified within 3 attempts and within 2 years after training, he will be required to complete another 150-hour CAN training program.
