If you are enrolled in a facility-based program, you can start working as a nursing assistant if the facility takes the responsibility for all your actions. Since you are still under training you are not allowed to perform any nursing procedure that has not been taught in the classroom or without the presence of the Instructor. To continue working as a nursing assistant in the facility you are already in, you must get certified within 120 days from the start of your work.
Criminal Background Checks
Most background checks are done when a student is enrolled in a program. There are some programs however, that require you to present a background check before you can enroll. The background checks with fingerprinting in California are done through the Live Scan Services. The training facility is required by the ATCS to provide a copy of each student’s completed Request for Live Scan Services prior to the start of the clinical practice. No student is allowed to handle any patient without undergoing the background checks.
National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam
After you complete the program, you can then apply for the state license exams. Another important requirement that you must do before applying is that you must pass the background checks. Once those two are done all that are left are minor requirements like passing immunization records, complete application forms, transcript of record, and paying the fees for the tests.
The NNAAP exam consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Only those who are able to complete an approved training program may apply for the exam. Candidates are required to pass all the tests within 3 attempts to get certified. If you fail your 3rd attempt, you will have to undergo retraining.
On your exam day, please arrive at least 20 minutes before the actual scheduled time to avoid being late. Latecomers are not allowed to enter the exam area and take the test. Please remember that all payments are permanent and non-refundable.
