There are now a lot of people seeking to become a nurse aide in California. The demand for this job in the state is very high, and is constantly rising as the elderly in the population increases. To work as a nurse aide in this state you must receive the proper training and get certified by passing the certification exam.
In California, it is the CDPH that is responsible for approving and monitoring CNA training programs. To be eligible to challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam you must complete a program that is approved by the CDPH. Approved programs are required to offer 150 hours of lectures and supervised clinical training. These programs are offered by both public and private institutions and schools, and are headed by qualified instructors.
You can also enroll in the CNA program that is offered by the American Red Cross. Aside from offering both in-house and online training to prospective nurse aides, they also offer their own certification exam. Please note that the training you receive in a Red Cross CNA program will not make you eligible to apply for the NNAAP exam.
Both the Red Cross certification exam and the NNAAP exam are divided into two parts the knowledge test and the skills evaluation exam. Candidates who have difficulty in reading English can apply to take the oral version of the knowledge test. Candidates must pass all the tests to get certified.
Each candidate is given only three attempts to pass all the tests. When retaking, the candidates are required to retake the test they failed. If a candidate still fails his or her third attempt, he/she will be required to undergo retraining.
The Aide and Technician Certification Section is responsible for issuing CNA certifications in California. The names of all who passed the certification exam are forwarded to the ATCS. If you pass all the tests, you can expect your CNA certification to arrive at your mailing address within 10 business days after passing.
The CDPH offers reciprocity to certified nurse aides from other states who wish to transfer and work in California. To be eligible for reciprocity, the applicant must have a valid certification and a clean record. He must not have any records of patient abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of the patient’s property. Interested candidates must complete the application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070503.pdf) and submit it to the CDPH.
