Working as a nursing assistant is a very fulfilling and challenging job. Among the different members of the health care team, nursing assistants work most closely with the patients. Nursing assistants provide nursing care and assistance to patients. They help with different daily activities while promoting patient independence. They assist with ADLs such as bathing, eating, dressing, exercising, ambulating, and many more.
Since nursing assistants work with mostly elderly people, it is important that they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to meet the individual needs of each patient. That is why the first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to enroll in a state-approved 150-hour training program. Training will consist of theoretical lessons and supervised practical training.
Upon completion, the next step in becoming a nursing assistant is to challenge the NNAAP exam. The NNAAP exams provide a standard for nursing assistants. Individuals who wish to become a nursing assistant must pass the multiple-choice knowledge test and the skills evaluation. Candidates who are able to pass all the tests will get certified by the Aide and Technician Certification Section or the ATCS and will have their names added to the Nurse Aide Registry (NAR).
Employers are required to check the Registry for the certification of each applicant before hiring them. If you wish to check your own record, you can do this by going to http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx. Once you are there, just simply enter your complete name or certification number.
Because of the shortage of nursing assistants in California, the state welcomes certified nursing assistants from other states. If they wish to work in CA, they must first apply for reciprocity. They will need to provide the following and send it to the ATCS:
• Completed application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070503.pdf)
• Proof of certification
• Proof of work as a nursing assistant within the last 2 years (for applications who have been certified for more than 2 years)
• A copy of the Request for Live Scan Services
• Completed Verification of Current Nursing Assistant Certification (form CHPH 931)
