Working as a nurse aide is very fulfilling and rewarding. Not only do you get to help other people, but there are also plenty of opportunities for those who are in this line of work. Training to become a nurse aide in California is very practical. The process is quick, and because of the high demand for CNAs there are a number of training institutions that offer free training.
In order to work as a nursing assistant in the state of California you must be licensed from the state registry. This will require you to complete a training program and take the competency test. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age to qualify. The training will consist of classroom coursework and instruction and clinical experience practicing fundamental tasks used on the job.
Nurse Aide Training Programs are now being offered by community colleges, nursing homes, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, assisted living centers, private training institutions, and many more. There are also some institutions that offer free training. Those who have some financial troubles can also enroll in a American Red Cross program. When seeking for a program to enroll in, just make sure to choose one that is approved by the CDPH.
CNA training is required to consist of classroom instructions and practical training under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Approved programs offer no less than 150 hours of training. All students are required to undergo the background checks before going to the clinical area. Students will also spend 16 hours of the following concepts before the start of their practical training:
• Medical and Surgical Asepsis
• Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• Patient Rights
• Patient Independence
• Safety Protocols
• Emergency Procedures (such as the CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver)
Once you complete your training, you will become eligible to apply for the certification exam. Passing the certification exam is the final step in becoming a nurse aide. The OBRA of ’87 mandates that all nurse aides must be certified in order to work in a nursing facility. RNs, LPNs, medics, and corpsmen can also apply directly for the exams.
The certification exam consists of a 70-item multiple-choice written (oral) knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates will be allotted 2 hours to answer all questions in the knowledge test and 25 minutes to perform the 5 required nursing skills. Candidates are required to pass both parts to get certified by the Aide and Technician Certification Section. Every applicant will be given a maximum of three chances to pass the exams. They must take all three within a span of 2 years from the completion of their training. If they happen to fail for the third time, they are required to redo their entire training. You can get answers to additional questions you may have by calling the CA Public Health Licensing & Certification program at (916) 552-8700.
Upon passing, the ATCS will then send you your CNA certificate, which you will use when you apply for work. You can expect it to arrive within 10 business days after you pass. If it does not arrive within 30 days after you pass, please inform call the ATCS at (916) 327-2445.
CNA certifications are only valid for 24 months. All nurse aides are required to renew their certification before it expires. No CNA is allowed to continue working with an expired certification. For more information on how to reactivate your certification, please follow this link: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/occupations/Documents/How-to-Renew-Your-Cert.pdf.
