Job security is an important matter to consider when selecting a career. If you want a stable job with plenty of opportunities, then you might want to think about becoming a healthcare provider. The field of healthcare will always have need for healthcare providers because it will always be a necessity. A great way to enter this field is to become a CNA or certified nursing assistant.
A nursing assistant can be defined as an individual who is trained to assist licensed nurses in providing care to patients in different healthcare settings. You can find nursing assistants working in nursing homes, hospitals, long-term care centers, rehabilitation clinics, assisted living centers, and even at the patient’s own home. This is one of the many reasons why nursing assistants are in-demand throughout the United States. It is considered as an entry-level profession. Compared to other career choices, the process of becoming a nursing assistant is a lot quicker
All aspiring nursing assistants are required to complete a state-approved training program. CNA programs in California consist of 50 hours of lectures and 100 hours of clinical practice. Most programs take about 8 to 25 months to complete. When you are searching for a program to enroll in, just make sure that the program is approved by the California Department of Public Health.
Completing an approved program will qualify you to apply for the certification exam. According to the federal and state law, only certified nursing assistants may work in a state-approved healthcare facility. Employers verify each applicant’s certification before hiring them by going to http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx.
You will only get certified if you pass both the written (oral) test and the practical skills evaluation of the certification exam. You will have 2 years after passing your training program to get certified. If you fail to get certified within that time, then you will be required to undergo retraining before you can reapply.
Due to the number of applicants, the state has authorized Pearson VUE to help conduct, score, and release the exam results. If you visit their website at www.pearsonvue.com you can download a copy of the Candidate Handbook, which contains detailed information regarding the exam.
CNA certifications in California are only valid for 24 months after passing. A notice is sent out by the ATCS at least 4 months before your certification’s expiration; instructing you on how to renew your certification. No nurse aide is allowed to continue working once his or her certification has expired. To be eligible for renewal, you must work for at least 8 hours as a paid nursing aide and complete 48 hours of in-service/CE.
