A CNA certification is required to work as a nurse aide in California. The Aide and Technician Certification Section is responsible for issuing certificates. You can get a certificate by either passing the certification exams or by applying for reciprocity.
The process of reciprocity is only for certified nurse aides who are listed in another state’s Nurse Aide Registry. This process will allow them to transfer their certification to California and work in approved nursing facilities. For them to apply, they must provide the following to the Aide and Technician Certification Section:
• A copy of the applicant’s state-issued CNA certificate
• Proof of work as a nursing aide for the last 2 years (not required for those who have been certified for less than 2 years).
• A copy of the Request for the Live Scan Service. The applicant must be fingerprinted in California for the criminal background check.
• A completed Verification of Current Nursing Aide Certification form or CDPH 931 form
• Completed application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070503.pdf)
If the applicant gets approval from the ATCS, he will receive a California-issued CNA certificate. Applicants through this route will not be required to undergo any training or testing.
If you have never been a certified nurse aide before, then you will be required to take both parts of the certification exam. The exam is divided into a multiple-choice knowledge exam and a practical skills evaluation. Candidates must pass all parts to get certified.
All applicants for the certification exam are required to successfully complete a CDPH-approved nurse aide training program or NATP. These programs take 150 hours to complete. The hours are divided into theory and supervised practical training. Students will learn 16 different modules that will include infection control, nutrition, vital signs, roles and responsibilities, basic nursing procedures, personal care, and many more.
Registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, medics, corpsmen, and nursing students and graduates are also able to apply for this exam. If they wish to take the CNA certification exam, they must first provide proof of training and education to the ATCS. If deemed eligible, they can immediately take the exam.
