There is now a growing demand for certified nursing assistants throughout the United States, including California. If you are seeking a way to start a career in health care, then this would be the perfect opportunity to do so. With such high demands you will not have any problem in getting work once you become a certified nursing assistant.
Aspiring nursing assistant candidates are mandated by California law to enroll and complete a CDPH-certified training program. The duration of approved programs lasts 150 hours. A training institution can increase these hours by providing the CDPH a lesson plan and the schedule for the additional hours. 100 of the hours are allotted to supervised clinical practice while the remaining 50 is for classroom lectures.
All students must be fingerprinted and apply for the Live Scan Services. This process is for the criminal background check. No student is allowed to proceed to the clinical portion of the training without a background check. The institution is required to submit copies of the Request for Live Scan Services of each student to ATCS before straining the clinical training.
Once you are through with the program, you can then request for an application packet for the NNAAP examinations. The NNAAP exam is designed to determine if a nursing assistant candidate is able to meet the standards of both the federal and the state. If the candidate meets them, he will be certified by the ATCS. No nursing assistant is allowed to work in a certified nursing facility without a certification.
The NNAAP exam consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a skills evaluation of selected nursing procedures that were taught in the program. If you want to take an oral exam, you must make an official request during your application. Any requests for special accommodations due to certain disabilities must also be made during that time.
If there are no technical problems, the results of the NNAAP exams are released on the same day. The ATCS will send the certificates, to the address provided by the candidate, within a few days after passing. Once certified, it will be your responsibility to keep your certification active. To do this you must renew your certification every 2 years. A notice is sent out by the ATCS at least 4 months before your certification expires. An expired certification can no longer be renewed by can be reactivated by passing a competency evaluation exam.
