A CNA certification is a requirement to work in a nursing facility in California as a nurse aide. If you have never been certified as a nurse aide before, then the only way for you to get certified is to pass the certification examination. The certification exam consists of two parts – a written/oral exam and a skills evaluation. To get certified, you must pass both of these exams.
A failed part of the exam means that you will have to reapply and retake the test you failed. Each candidate is only allowed to retake the exams twice. If you fail for the 3rd time, you are required to complete another training program before you can reapply.
Before you can take the exams, you must first establish eligibility to apply. The best way is to attend a CNA training program. These programs are offered by nursing homes, hospitals, vocational colleges, technical colleges, rehabilitation centers, and other public and private training facilities. To avoid any problems later on, please attend a program that is approved by the California Department of Public Health.
If you want to further your knowledge and skills as a health care provider, you can also enroll at the same time in a Home Health Aide Training Program. Normally you would be required to enroll in a 120-hour HHA program, but since you are already enrolled in 150-hour CNA program, you will only need to attend a 40-hour HHA program that will act as supplemental lessons and training.
CNA certifications are only valid for 2 years. It is important that you renew your certification before it expires. An expired certification can no longer be renewed. It can however, be reactivated by passing an evaluation exam, provided that your certification has not expired for more than 2 years. No CNA or HHA is allowed to work with an expired certification.
To qualify for renewal, you are required to work for at least 8 hours providing nursing services in approved nursing facilities. While working you must be under the supervision of a licensed nurse and be paid for the services that you provided. In addition to proof of employment, another requirement is to complete at 48 hours of in-service or continuing education. You must complete a minimum of 12 hours per year. All your in-service/CE must also be properly recorded on this form: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/pubsforms/forms/CtrldForms/CDPH283a.pdf.
