Every nursing aide that is allowed to work in a N.C. nursing facility must be on the state’s Nurse Aide I Registry. Only when an individual’s name is on the Registry will he receive his license and be allowed to work in a North Carolina nursing facility. Generally applicants who wish to become certified and allowed to work in care facilities will attend a state recommended course and pass the competency exams along with meeting other identification and immunization requirements.
A CNA certificate is valid for only 24 months. Since the Registry is no longer sending out paper notifications, all new nursing aides are required to have a working email address. To receive a notification when your certificate will expire, you must register by entering your email address and SSN when you go to the link: https://www.ncnar.org/verify_listings1.jsp#verify. The listings on this page are renewed every business day. Please note that the Registry is not responsible if the notifications are not received.
The expiration date for an initial nurse aide certificate falls on the last day of the month that the certificate was issued. For example, if the nursing aide received his license on March 1, 2012, the expiration date for his certificate will be on March 31, 2014.
The certificate must be renewed before its expiration date. Expired certificates can no longer be renewed. If the nursing aide wishes to continue his eligibility to become a nursing aide after his certificate expires, he will have to undergo retraining and retake the state’s license exam. To remain eligible for renewal, you must be able to work a minimum of 8 hours every 24 consecutive months. Renewal of certificates does not have any fees.
