Your first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to enroll in a state-approved training program. These CNA classes offer a minimum of 75 hours of lessons and 100 hours of clinical duties. Depending on which program you enrolled in, it may take you 4 to 6 months to complete your training. At the end of the program, you will need to take and pass the final exams before you are allowed to graduate.
Once you complete your training, you will then become eligible to apply for the license exams. These exams are composed of a written and a skills evaluation exam. You must be able to pass both exams to get your name on the Registry.
If you failed on at least one part of the exams, then you will have to retake the exams. The state allows you to retake it up to two times within 90 days. If you want, you may also take the tests immediately on the same day that your received your results/scores. If you three times, you will then be required to undergo retraining before you will be allowed to take the exams again. After certification renewal will need to be submitted every 2 years and is accomplished by sending work verification from your employer to the state. A minimum of 8 hours on the job is required to remain active.
If you are certified and working and for some reason have lost your active status there are several steps you should take to inform the registry.
1. Submit a letter from your employer that includes your work verification, job title, work duties, and employment dates.
2. Copy of your W-2 Form.
3. Copy of your paycheck stub.
Call the registry at 573-526-5686 to speak with an official representative to learn more.
