The current demand for nursing aides in California is continually increasing as the number of elderly in the population also increases. This demand is believed to continue up until the end of the decade. If you are thinking of changing your work, then this is the best time to do so.
According to OBRA, you must first undergo a state-certified CNA training course. These courses are available in hospitals, nursing homes, community colleges, vocational schools, technical colleges, private training centers, and government organizations. The state requires that completion of at least 100 hours of supervised clinical practice and 50 hours of classroom training in order to complete a course. Most of the training courses in the state can be completed in 2 to 6 months depending on the course you choose.
When you complete your training, you can now apply for the NNAAP exam which is given by Pearson VUE. This test involves not just a pencil and paper test, but a practical skills demonstration as well. Both the knowledge test and skills exam are taken on the same day at an approved testing center.
You will need the following forms when applying for the NNAAP exam:
• Initial Application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070503.pdf)
• NNAAP Exam Application Form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070508.pdf)
When submitting the application forms, you will also need to include the payment of $90 for the written and skills test. There is an additional charge of $15 if you request for an oral exam. The payment must be in the form of a money order or a cashier’s check. Personal checks or cash is not accepted. Incomplete applications will not be processed by the ATCS.
The scheduling of the NNAAP exam is a first-come, first-serve basis. If you are unavailable on your scheduled day, you are entitled to one free rescheduling. If you decide to cancel your application you will only receive 40% of what you paid. To avoid any additional penalties when rescheduling, please inform the Testing Center at least 48 hours before your scheduled day.
The results of the exams are normally released on the same day if there are no technical difficulties. If you pass all the tests your name will be forwarded to the ATCS. They will then mail you your CNA certificate within 10 days after passing. This certificate will only be valid for 2 years and must be renewed before it expires. For more information on the renewal process, please follow this link: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/occupations/Documents/How-to-Renew-Your-Cert.pdf.
