It is not that hard to become a nursing assistant in the state of California, however there are several different requirements you must consider before you can become certified to work. All aspiring nursing aides in California are required to complete a state-approved Nursing Aide Training Program or NATP.
Many of the programs in this state have minimum requirements that must be met in order for them to accept the candidate. This includes physical and mental fitness, an age requirement of 18, a basic educational background, and a clean record. The federal and state are also very strict when it comes to criminal background checks. Every student is subjected to this check and is not allowed to proceed to the second portion of the training without undergoing fingerprinting.
Programs in this state are required to last at least 150 hours. Training will involve classroom instructions and clinical training while under the supervision of a clinical instructor. The program you join will need to provide both theoretical classroom instruction that covers nursing procedures as well as provides hands-on skills training in commonly used health care tasks. Depending on which program you choose to enroll in, training can cost you at least $600 to $1000.
If you do not have this kind of money, you do not have to abandon your dream of becoming a a worker in the health care profession. Because of the shortage of nursing aides, many health care providers and institutions are now offering cheap or free training. The American Red Cross offers free training and can be found throughout the state.
Completing an approved program will make each candidate capable of handling different situations that they will encounter as a nursing aide. This will also make them eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam. This exam is conducted by Pearson VUE and consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam.
If you are able to pass all the tests, your name will be forwarded to the Nurse Aide Registry and the ATCS will send you your CNA certificate within 10 business days after passing. The certificate will show proof that you are allowed to work in a certified nursing facility in California as a CNA.
Despite having a certificate, employers will still verify every applicant’s certification before hiring them. They will only hire those who have been certified by the ATCS and were able to maintain that certification. If you wish to check your record on the Registry, you can visit http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx and simply enter your name or certification number.
If you have questions about certification requirements you can call the CA Nurse Aide Registry at their phone number 916-327-2445. For information about the licensing program you should call the Public Health Licensing & Certification program at (916) 552-8700.
