If you are looking for a way to start a career in the field of health, then you should consider becoming a nursing aide. The State of California is one of the best places to train to become a nursing aide. The demand is high and the training is quick and exciting. Nursing aides in this state earn an average of $27,000 in a year, depending on where he or she works.
To work as a nursing aide in CA, you must be certified by the Aide and Technician Certification Section. You can be certified by passing all the tests in the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. This exam is divided into a multiple-choice knowledge test and a practical skills test. The State has authorized Pearson VUE to conduct the exams, as well as score and release the results. All nursing assistant student candidates who are applying for the NNAAP exams are required to attend and complete a CNA training program to be able to apply. Candidates must only enroll in programs that are approved by the state’s Department of Public Health.
You must attend a state approved course that provides both clinical hands-on skills training and class instruction into theoretical nursing procedures. There are also some online courses that you can enroll in, however you will need to take the clinical experience portion of the class in a physical location. To be eligible to enroll you will need to have a physical exam, submit TB card & immunization records, and photo I.D’s, as well as go through a criminal background screening at both the state and federal level.
Approved programs take 150 hours of training to complete. Their curriculums are divided into classroom instructions on different nursing concepts and practical training in a nursing home or facility. During the entire training, the students will be handled by a qualified instructor who has enough nursing experience and has taken courses involving planning, implementing, and reviewing nursing programs. Students will learn about vital signs, nutrition, assisting in the patients’ daily activities like dressing, eating, and many more. In order to take the competency tests, you must complete the training program.
The NNAAP exams consist of a written knowledge exam and a clinical skills evaluation. Candidates can also take an oral test for the knowledge exam if they have troubles with reading English. Candidates will have 120 minutes to answer all 70 multiple-choice questions on the knowledge test and 25 minutes for the skill exam. Both exams are given on the same day, so plan accordingly. You will need to pass both portions within three attempts in order to become certified.
Those who become certified are eligible to work for 24 months before needing to renew their certification through the nurse aide registry. A nursing aide can continue to work so long as his certificate remains active. One can keep their certificate active by renewing it every 2 years. Failure to renew it will cause it to expire. Expired certificates can no longer be renewed but can be activated by passing a competency exam.
