Before you can become a nursing assistant and handle patients, you must first receive the proper education and training. This is why you must enroll yourself in a certified CNA program. According to the list of the Department of Public Health, there are over 155 certified programs that you can choose from. Listed on this page are the programs that are available within the city. A state-approved program offers its students 100 hours of training which are divided into lectures and hands-on skills training. These programs are all coordinated with a Registered Nurse with at least 2 years of experiences.
As a nursing assistant student, you will be taught different concepts like mental health, rehabilitation, infection control, resident’s rights and independence, and emergency procedures. You will also be trained on 25 competency skills like proper hand washing, vital signs taking, offering and removing bedpan, doing partial or full bed baths, assisting in feeding, dressing, ambulating, and performing ROM exercises.
Once you complete your training, you can then apply for the licensee exams. LPNs and RNs are allowed to apply for the license exams. Since they receive similar training to those offered in nursing assistant programs, they can apply directly without the need to undergo any retraining. A common requirement for all applicants are the submission of a copy of their proof of training, ID photo, fingerprint cards, background check results for criminal records, and they payment for the different fees.
