The Nursing Home Reform Act was created with the goal of improving the quality of care that patients receive in health care facilities, especially from nurse aides. With the creation of this Act, all individuals who wish to become a nurse aide must challenge and pass the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam. This is to determine if the NA candidate is able to meet the standards of both the federal and the state.
All student nurse aides who are applying for the NNAAP exam must complete a 150-hour NA training program that is approved by the California Department of Public Health. You will have a maximum of 2 years to apply and pass the exam. If a candidate fails to get certified within 2 years or after three attempts, he is required to complete another training program before he can reapply.
When applying for the exam, you will need to complete the application packet, which you can get from your instructor or by going to www.pearsonvue.com. The exam is conducted by the Pearson VUE Testing Company. You can also visit and apply through their website. All first time testers are required to pay $90 for both parts of the exam. Payment for the exams must be in the form of money order, cashier’s check, or company check. Cash or personal checks are not accepted.
The NNAAP examination consists of two parts – a knowledge test and a skills evaluation test. Candidates will have the option to take either the written or oral version of the knowledge test. The oral version was mainly created for those who have trouble reading English. If you are unsure on which exam you should take, you can do a self-assessment reading test on the Pearson VUE website.
To get certified you are required to pass all parts of the exam. After each test, your paper will be faxed for scoring. If there are not technical problems the results will be sent back within 10 minutes after being faxed. If you pass, your name will be forwarded to the Aide and Technician Certification Section and they will send you your CNA certification within 10 days after you pass.
This certification will show proof that you have met all training and testing standards. You are allowed to work as a nurse aide so long as your certification is valid. To keep it valid, you will need to renew your certification every 24 months. It is important to renew your certification before it expires. No certified nurse aide is allowed to work with an expired certificate.
