A CNA certification is a requirement to work in a federally certified long-term care facility. An aspiring worker can only get certified by passing the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination after successfully completing a state-certified program. Nursing students and graduates are allowed to apply for the NNAAP exams if they can provide proof of their training to the Department of Education to get an authorization to test.
School Instruction
Classes will need to provide instruction in the fundamental health care skills you will use on the job and provide both theoretical information and practical skills experience. During your class you will get actual hands-on experience in a medical environment and learn many of the duties of the job. You will be tested on five of the skills you learn during your license exam. After successfully completing your training requirement you will want to schedule a time to take the certification tests. You are allowed 24 months from the time you took your school class to pass the exams. Frequently the test location is held in the same facility you took your program. To find a location you can ask your school for a refer to a nearby location or contact the American Red Cross at 800-795-2350.
An exception to the rule that you must enroll in a CNA training program to be able to apply for the state exams, is if you are a nursing graduate. This rule applies to those that have been trained in college courses as well as medics in the military. This process is called applying for reciprocity and you can get more information by calling Pearson VUE at 1-800-852-0518. Although those who qualify are not required to undergo retraining, they must still pass the background check of both the federal and the state.
The Written (or Oral) Examination
There are two parts of the NNAAP exams. The first one is the written/oral examination. This portion consists of a 70-item multiple-choice exam. Out of the total number of test questions only 60 of them will be scored; the other 10 are pre-test questions. Candidates are given a maximum of two hours to answer all questions. The Nurse Evaluator will notify the applicants if there are only fifteen (15) minutes left.
An oral exam may be taken instead of the written exam by selecting it on the registration form for the NNAAP exams. This type of exam is usually taken by those who have trouble reading. Candidates who choose this type are given the same number of hours to answer all 70 questions. It consist of 60 multiple-choice questions and 10 reading comprehension questions, which are given on an audio cassette.
Skills Evaluation
The manual skills evaluation is the second portion of the exams. In this part, applicants are asked to perform randomly selected nurse aide skills in front of a Nurse Aide Evaluator. Each applicant is given a maximum of 30 minutes to perform all skills. NNAAP exam applicants must perform all skills satisfactorily to pass this part.
Score Reporting
At the end of each portion of the NNAAP exam, the evaluator will fax the applicant’s papers to be checked. The results are usually sent back within 10 minutes after faxing them if there are not technical problems. The score reports will indicate if the applicant has passed both tests or not.
Nurse Aide Registry
If a candidate passes both tests, his or her name will be forwarded to the Nurse Aide Registry. Once the registry receives the names, they will then mail the nurse aide’s Registration Card within 3 weeks after passing. This card can serve as proof of meeting federal and state training and testing requirements. It mustn’t be tampered with. Making any changes to it may jeopardize a workers status on the Registry.
