The main goal in the process of becoming a nursing aide in California is to get certified. According to the law, only certified workers are allowed to work in this occupation in a hospital, or nursing facility. A nursing aide can only be certified if his name is entered in the NAR. In this state the Aide and Technician Certification Section on the L&C is responsible for certifying CNAs and HHAs.
If you have never been certified before as a nursing aide, then you will have to challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam to get certified. The NNAAP exam is only available to those who have received the necessary training. The best way to establish eligibility is to complete a CDPH-approved 150-hour CNA training program. When enrolled, you will learn the knowledge and skills needed when you take care of a patient as a nursing aide. Depending on which program you choose to enroll in, it can take you an average of 4-6 months to complete your training.
Once done, you will be ready to fill out the application form and send it to the ATCS. The exams are currently handled by Pearson VUE. You can download a copy of the application packet by going to their official website at www.pearsonvue.com. You may also apply directly through their website. If you do so, you will have to pay with the use of your MasterCard of Visa.
To get into the NAR, you must pass the knowledge test and the skills evaluation. Each candidate will only be given 3 attempts to pass. These attempts must also be used within 2 years of completing one’s training. If you fail to pass the tests after three attempts, you will be required to undergo retraining before you can reapply.
Once your name is entered into the NAR, it will be your responsibility to maintain your record and keep your certification valid. CNA certifications are only valid for 2 years. You must renew it before it expires. This requires you to work as a paid nursing aide for at least 8 hours and complete 48 hours’ worth of in-service/continuing education. The state allows you to do a maximum of 24 hours of CE through an approved online program. You can visit www.cdph.ca.gov for more information about renewing your certification.
